An Act To Certify Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Computed Tomography

Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:

Sec. 1. 32 MRSA §9852, sub-§§1-A and 1-B  are enacted to read:

1-A Certified nuclear medicine technologist in computed tomography.   "Certified nuclear medicine technologist in computed tomography" means an individual who has successfully completed the requirements for certification pursuant to section 9855, subsection 2-A and is certified by the board to perform specific duties related to computed tomography prescribed by the board by rule and in accordance with guidelines set by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.
1-B Computed tomography.   "Computed tomography" means the use of ionizing radiation to create cross-sectional, 3-dimensional computerized images for diagnostic purposes.

Sec. 2. 32 MRSA §9855, sub-§2-A  is enacted to read:

2-A Certified nuclear medicine technologist in computed tomography.   To qualify as a certified nuclear medicine technologist in computed tomography, an applicant must:
A Hold a current license to practice as a nuclear medicine technologist pursuant to subsection 2; and
B Successfully pass the certification examination in computed tomography from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, as determined by the board.

Sec. 3. 32 MRSA §9856, sub-§1,  as amended by PL 2007, c. 402, Pt. X, §3, is further amended to read:

1. Application.   To apply for a license as a radiographer, nuclear medicine technologist , or radiation therapy technologist or for a limited license , or for certification as a certified nuclear medicine technologist in computed tomography, an applicant shall:
A. Submit a written application with supporting documents to the board;
B. Pay the application fee as set under section 9859-A; and
C. Pay an examination fee as set under section 9859-A.

summary

This bill amends the laws governing nuclear medicine technologists to create a computed tomography certification for nuclear medicine technologists that:

1. Hold a current license to practice as a nuclear medicine technologist; and

2. Have successfully passed the certification examination in computed tomography from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, as determined by the Radiologic Technology Board of Examiners.

The bill authorizes a certified nuclear medicine technologist to perform specific duties related to computed tomography that are in accordance with national guidelines and rules approved by the board.
