An Act To Expand Funding for Early Childhood Education
Be it enacted by the People of the State of Maine as follows:
Sec. 1. 20-A MRSA §1, sub-§10, as enacted by PL 1981, c. 693, §§5 and 8, is amended to read:
10. Elementary school. "Elementary school" means a public preschool program or that portion of a school that provides instruction in any combination of kindergarten through grade 8.
Sec. 2. 20-A MRSA §1, sub-§23-A, as enacted by PL 2007, c. 141, §2, is amended to read:
23-A. Public preschool program. "Public preschool program" means a program offered by a public school or a Head Start agency that provides instruction to children who are 4 years of age.
Sec. 3. 20-A MRSA §1, sub-§46 is enacted to read:
46. Head Start agency. "Head Start agency" means a program designated as a Head Start agency by the Federal Government under 42 United States Code, Section 9836.
SUMMARY
This bill amends the definitions of "elementary school" and "public preschool program" to include federally recognized Head Start agency programs.
