Requires local school administrative units to change from an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach to pest management to organic techniques. School Significant statewide
The required local activities in this bill may represent a State mandate pursuant to the Constitution of Maine.  Unless General Fund appropriations are provided to fund at least 90% of the additional costs or a Mandate Preamble is amended to the bill and two-thirds of the members of each House vote to exempt this mandate from the funding requirement, municipalities may not be required to implement these changes.
Fiscal Detail and Notes
The impact to local school administrative units may include additional costs associated with monitoring for pests and disease, training and redevelopment of the annual facility maintenance plan.
The School Finance and Operations program within the Department of Education will require a one-time General Fund appropriation of $16,250 in fiscal year 2013-14 for the costs associated with hiring a landscape architect to develop a landscaping design for newly constructed school facilities that will minimize or eliminate the need to use pesticides.
